One study found that 19% of second trimester losses were caused by problems with the umbilical cord. There are also some women who have none of the signs of miscarriage. They may simply find out at a regular prenatal appointment that their baby has died. This is usually discovered during an ultrasound, which may be performed if the doctor or midwife does not hear a heart beat with a Doppler by pregnancy weeks 12-14.
Every pregnancy is at risk of miscarriage; however, if you drink alcohol or smoke, your risk of having one is higher (see Causes of miscarriage). You can help to reduce your risk of pregnancy problems by eating a balanced diet, losing any excess weight and by not drinking too much or smoking.
